Mt. Jefferson
Drive 103 miles (2 hours)
Hike 5 miles (12 miles in winter)
Difficulty Strenuous

Driving Directions

Take I-91 North to exit 19, I-93 South to exit 40, and Route 302 East, through the intersection with Route 3, to Bretton Woods. About 3 miles past this intersection, turn left onto Base Station Road, toward the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. About 2.5 miles farther, turn left onto Jefferson Notch Road, and drive 2 miles to the trailhead. In winter, use the Appalachia trailhead (see Mt. Adams), or alternatively Lowe's Path or Castle Trail.

Hiking Directions

In summer: follow the Caps Ridge Trail 2.5 miles to the summit, return by the same route.

In winter: (from Appalachia) follow Air Line Trail to its intersection with the Randolph Path, turn right onto this and continue about 4 miles to the Appalachian Trail along the ridgeline. Turn right on this, then soon take another right to reach the summit of Jefferson. Return by the same route; following the AT farther Northeast to summit Adams and return by the Air Line Trail is also an option.
