The following trips are approved for CnT leaders without extra certifications to lead:

  • Balch Hill
  • Mink Brook
  • Cabin overnights
  • Road biking
  • Skiing at the golf course or Oak Hill
  • Pine Park
  • Franconia Falls
  • Boston Lot Lake
  • Cardigan (southwest side, during appropriate weather)
  • Any trip that does not involve hiking or strenuous physical activity (e.g. applepicking, corn mazes).

Proposed Additions to the List

New trips can also be added to this list. A Cabin and Trail leader who wants to add a trip to this list should first ensure that it conforms to the following criteria:

  1. The trip should not take trippees more than 1.5 hours from a road.
  2. The trip should not be more than 5 miles round trip.

However, there are a number of other features that affect the safety of a potential trip which cannot be captured in a short set of criteria. For this reason, the following protocol should be used for adding trips to the Short/Safe List:

  • If a CnT leader without additional certifications has an idea for a new short trip, they should first run it as a co-lead with a Wilderness-Certified leader.
  • After the trip, the two leaders should meet with both CnT chairs and either Brian Kunz or Rory Gawler to talk about the trip.
  • If the group decides that someone without a WFA can safely lead this trip, then it will be added to the Short/Safe list and all CnT leaders will be permitted to lead it.
